About us
The Old Newtonians Junior Clubs focus, is to encourage children to develop as rugby and team players. “Non Sibi Sed Posteris” is the Old Newtonians motto, meaning “Not for ourselves, but for those who follow”. Embracing this motto the junior section endeavours to develop lifelong rugby players building friendships for life.
We recognise and respect that children develop at different rates, and success means different things to all. It is our role to support all children, whatever their standard, to ensure they enjoy rugby, and reach their full potential.
Throughout the season all players will receive equal game time, limited squads will only be used where competition rules prevent the use of the whole squad. Suitable fixtures will be arranged throughout the season, to ensure that all players get an equal opportunity.
Where squad sizes allow, more than one team will be entered into any competition, ideally of mixed ability. Friendly games will involve all available players, with mixed ability teams being rotated throughout the game.
Player welfare is paramount, new players will have a graduated introduction to full contact in a staged and measured way. This means that a child starting life as a rugby player, is included in full contact, (training and games) in a progressive manner, with suitable opposition, to reduce risk, build confidence and maintain their passion for the game.
Old Newtonians RFC is one of the oldest clubs in Leicester, founded in 1904. We are situated in Leicester Forest East, on the Hinckley Road. Old Newtonians has its own private ground, club house with changing rooms, showering facilities, and bar which has recently been refurbished. These facilities are also available to hire for private functions.
Attendance
Dedication and consistency is actively encouraged at training sessions, to not only develop the individual player, but to help build team camaraderie. Players who regularly miss training, but are available for games, irrespective of their skill level, will not be selected ahead of players that show genuine commitment to training sessions.
Attitude
Players who show a positive attitude, are receptive to coaching and respect their team members, will be recognised. Where players have not been selected due to poor attitude or irregularity of attendance, they and their parents will be made aware, and areas for improvement identified. It is absolutely crucial that this policy is clear, transparent and shared, to ensure that all players are encouraged to maintain their development. Through this developmental ethos we strive to support players to reach their full potential with us, from micros through to colts.
Ability
Where there is a choice between two players who have equally positive attitudes and regularity of attendance, their ability will be considered. New players will always be welcome, irrespective of playing ability, and will be accommodated.
Coaches
The coaches are all volunteers and are dedicated to the development of all the children in their squad. Coaches have made a commitment to support the player’s development, until they move into the Colts section at age 16/17. During this time the coaches will:
⦁ Communicate openly with players and parents
⦁ Reinforce positive skills, behaviour and attitude
⦁ Provide specific feedback and support to maintain development
⦁ Make development fun
⦁ Openly discuss concerns
⦁ Be prepared and structured
⦁ Have the safety and wellbeing of all players as a priority
⦁ Embody the RFU vales of Teamwork, Respect, Discipline, Sportsmanship and Enjoyment
Expectations of Parents and Players:
Players and parents are an integral part of the successful development of players during their time at the Old Newtonians. In order to create an environment where players are able to develop, there are some simple expectations of players and parents alike, which are in line with the RFU core values of Teamwork, Respect, Discipline and Sportsmanship:
Players:
⦁ Play selflessly for the club and team on and off the field.
⦁ Respect match officials, opposition, team mates, supporters and coaches.
⦁ Enjoy being part of a team and Old Newtonians Rugby Club.
⦁ Obey the laws of the game, behave in a polite manner and uphold the values of the game.
⦁ Be generous in victory and defeat.
⦁ Pay attention and demonstrate commitment during training sessions and games.
Parents:
⦁ Support your child in upholding the values of rugby.
⦁ Have appropriate expectations of your child’s development, and discuss these with the coaches and your child.
⦁ Support the coaching team by communicating clearly with them, and respecting their decisions.

⦁ Ensure that your child attends training sessions, as these will support their development, and that of the team.
⦁ Respect match officials, players, supporters and coaches from all clubs.
⦁ Support in a dignified, encouraging and non-critical manner.
⦁ Focus on and celebrate the things your child does well.

It is imperative that the Strategic Plan is a living document that is accessible to all club members and parents with clearly identified objectives, milestones and owners. We will also need a management, governance and reporting approach that ensures development of, and progress against, agreed plans. We should also make use of individuals with specialist capability and/or knowledge to contribute to the development and ongoing delivery of these plans.
It is one things to produce a document, it is another to deliver against it and. Without volunteers to share the workload the effective management of our club will be compromised, so please look within yourselves to offer to perform a role, no matter how small, to help keep Old Newtonians Rugby Football Club moving forward.
